Travel Essentials

Travel Etiquette: while visiting Abu Dhabi, it's essential to respect local customs and traditions. Dress modestly when visiting religious sites, and avoid public displays of affection. At the entrance of each mall and public places you will see a sign with the rules to be respected, the do’s and dont’s, kindly pay attention to them. Always ask for permission before taking photos of people, particularly locals. Drinking alcohol in open and public places is forbidden. Pork is not sold in supermarkets, same goes for alcohol, licensed shops do so. Pork for instance can be found in “non muslims’’ sections of some supermarkets such as Spinney’s, Waitrose etc.

  • Currency: the official currency in Abu Dhabi is the United Arab Emirates Dirham (AED). It's advisable to exchange currency at banks or official exchange offices, and credit cards are widely accepted in major establishments. You can easily change money at arrival, just avoid doing so at airport currency exchanges as the rates do not worth it.

  • Cultural Aspects: Abu Dhabi is a culturally diverse city, with a mix of traditional Emirati culture and modern influences. Visitors should be mindful of local customs, such as Ramadan fasting and prayer times, and avoid consuming food or drink in public during fasting hours. That being said, you are allowed to eat at food courts or restaurants during the Holy month of Ramadan.

Moreover, it is not allowed to take pictures of others without their consent so you must be mindful of that point too. Some official buildings will also have a “photos not allowed” sign, kindly respect it.

  • Getting There: Zayed International Airport (AUH) serves as the primary gateway to the city. It is well-connected to major cities worldwide, with several international airlines offering direct flights.

  • Spoken Languages: Arabic is the official language of Abu Dhabi, but English is widely spoken and understood, especially in tourist areas and among expatriate communities. It is always appreciated by locals and the Arab residents to learn some basics in Arabic.

  • Religion: Islam is the official religion of the UAE, and visitors should be respectful of Islamic customs and practices. It's customary to remove shoes before entering mosques, covering heads and body for women. Some official and government places have a strict dress code, so make sure to check that before visiting them.

  • Visa requirements: it is your responsibility to check whether you need a visa to enter UAE/Abu Dhabi. Make sure to check your passport expiry date and always get in touch with your local embassy for emergencies (lost passport etc.)

  • Getting around: Abu Dhabi has an affordable and reliable taxi system (companies such as Uber or Careem also operates in the city). The minium fare is 12AED (day time). Buses are also available and can connect you to the major city attractions. You can also rent a car for which you must carry an international driving license.

  • Safety: Abu Dhabi is the epitome of safety. As a solo female traveler or with companions, concerns about pickpockets or harassment are non-existent. Forget your phone at a café? No problem. Leave your laptop unattended? Absolutely fine. Abu Dhabi's commitment to safety is unmatched, ensuring peace of mind for every visitor. Abu Dhabi has been voted 2023 safest city in the world! Also, if for any case you need to contact the police, dial 999. The police is very friendly here and very efficient.

  • Cultural events: before your trip, make sure to check if there are any local, cultural events/festivals over here.

  • Weather: The best time to visit the UAE is from November to April when the weather is mild and pleasant. Avoid visiting from May to September when temperatures soar, making outdoor activities challenging. Consider shoulder seasons in April/May and October for a balance between weather and crowd levels.

  • Events: I strongly recommend you check the Visit Abu Dhabi calendar for upcoming events, pop-ups and festivals during your stay.

2 DAYS ITINERARY

Day 1 - Cultural Exploration

A good day always starts with a good breakfast, isn’t it?

Here are my top 5 spots when it comes to eating breakfast like a King in Abu Dhabi

  • $$ Brunch & Cake, this acclaimed all-day dining venue has garnered numerous awards, celebrated for its captivating settings in iconic locales, stunning interior design, and a menu brimming with wholesome dishes served in generous portions. (TIP: go to the Marina and catch a stunning view of Etihad towers and the Gulf Sea)

  • $$ Al Farah Restaurant (prefer the Khalidiyah branch) or Bait El Kheytiar, for a traditional Levant breakfast.

  • $$ Sanderson’s in Al Seef, Sanderson’s offers a trendy setting with pale woods and rattan furnishings, ideal for starting your day. Known for one of Abu Dhabi’s best breakfasts, their menu includes options like homemade mango granola, brioche French toast, sweet potato frittata, and more, catering to every taste.

  • $$$ Al Fanar Restaurant & Café, for an authentic Emirati breakfast (try balaleet, rgag or chebab to mention only those).

Tradtional Levantine and Emirati breakfast

Immerse into Abu Dhabi’s past, present and future.

After a satisfying breakfast, start your day with a journey into the heart of Abu Dhabi's cultural tapestry at the magnificent Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. As the sun bathes the marble façade in golden hues, lose yourself in the intricate beauty of this architectural marvel, a testament to the city's rich heritage. Entrance is free, you can also book paid guided tours, make sure to check the opening timing before going there.

Here is how to access Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque.

IMPORTANT POINT: adherence to the designated dress code is required for entry. Women are required to wear an Abaya, which the mosque provides free of charge for visitors, and cover their hair. Additionally, both men and women must ensure their shoulders and knees are covered. Upon arrival at the entry gate, it is customary to remove your shoes. You will also pass security clearance before entering the mosque so please be cooperative!

TIP: I recommend you visit the mosque by day and night if you have the time! Night views are stunning.

Sheikh Zayed Grand mosque is adorned with 82 domes of varying sizes, with the main dome soaring to a height of 85 meters (279 feet) and a diameter of 32.8 meters (107 feet). Additionally, the mosque features 4 towering minarets standing at 107 meters (351 feet) tall each.

From there, venture to Saadiyat Island, a haven for art aficionados and cultural enthusiasts alike. There, the Louvre Abu Dhabi beckons, its gleaming dome a beacon of artistic inspiration. Wander through its halls, where masterpieces from around the world weave tales of history and creativity. There are some food and drinks options at the Louvre Abu Dhabi (Aptitude and the Fouquet’s)

TIP: If you are travelling with kids, do not miss the Louvre kids museum section! Even adults will have a blast!

You can also take them to Manarat Al Saadiyat for an arty and creative break.

Louvre Museum, Abu Dhabi, a world where architectural mastery meets cultural heritage.

For a delightful lunch experience, treat yourself to the exquisite offerings at Antonia in Mamsha Al Saadiyat, nestled within Mamsha Al Saadiyat. Indulge in authentic Italian cuisine, where their weekday business lunch is simply stunning, accompanied by mesmerizing sea views. Accessible by taxi or car, Mamsha Al Saadiyat offers complimentary parking for one hour, with an additional two hours provided by the restaurant. After your meal, take a leisurely stroll along the promenade overlooking the Arabian Gulf Sea, allowing for a serene and relaxed time to unwind.

As the afternoon sun casts its gentle glow, head towards the Corniche, where the city's skyline dances against the azure backdrop of the Arabian Gulf. If you are visiting during the hot and humid season (May-Sep.), prefer indoor activities such as:

Note that Marina Mall, Qasr Al Watan, Emirates Palace and Etihad Towers are all very close from one another. You can therefore combine all of them at once or visit at your own pace.

For an idyllic experience during your UAE visit, explore the stunning 8km waterfront corniche when the weather is at its best. Rent a bike or electric scooter to leisurely explore the picturesque surroundings at your own pace. With crystal-clear waters and sandy beaches lining the coast, it's an ideal time for swimming and sunbathing.

Whether you opt for paid beach clubs at renowned hotels like Radisson Blu, Sheraton, Rixos, Intercontinental, or St Regis, or prefer the charm of free public beaches, there's something for everyone. Don't forget to check out Groupon for fantastic deals on pool and beach day passes, as well as other enticing offers, to make the most of your stay while enjoying the pleasant weather along the UAE's coastline.

If you need to rest, nestle into a waterfront café (there are some options at Flatout specialty coffeeNation Towers, Arabica or Rain but to be honest, I wish there were more beachfront cafés). Otherwise, continue your journey towards the WTC Souk, where you can spend the whole evening walking alongside the aisles and maybe get some dinner. The Mall & Souk features modern architecture with traditional Arabian design elements, creating a distinctive and inviting atmosphere for shoppers.

However, I will be honest here, I would not recommend buying souvenirs from WTC Souk (unless something really makes your heart flitters) because it is expensive! However, the WTC Souk is a nice place to stroll and see the architecture, plus there is also a mall section.

Therefore, for souvenirs I recommend you head to those shops (to name only a few):

Day 2 - Exploring the Hidden Gems of Abu Dhabi

Choose from day 1 food recommendations or just explore as you wander throughout Abu Dhabi streets. Most of my delicious finds were really unexpected and unplanned!

Several options depending on when you are visiting Abu Dhabi

  • Option 1 (Nov.-Apr.): Make the most of your second day in Abu Dhabi by waking up early for a one-of-a-kind experience - a Mangrove Kayaking Tour. Set out on an exciting kayaking adventure through Abu Dhabi's captivating mangrove forests. There are several locations; I recommend you go for Al Reem park one so you can afterwards have maybe a cuppa coffee or tea, at Galleria Mall and Promenade.

Take in the splendor of this unique ecosystem and encounter the diverse wildlife that inhabits its tranquil waters. Get to see exotic birds, vibrant fish, and with luck on your side, catch a glimpse of the elusive dugongs that dwell in these serene surroundings. Delight in an unforgettable experience that allows you to connect intimately with the marvels of nature.

Kayaking experience, overlooking Al Reem Island Skyline

  • Option 2 (May-Oct.): I suggest you visit the Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital in the morning. You can experience the ancient art of falconry at the largest falcon hospital in the world. Learn about the importance of falcons in Emirati culture and tradition, as expert falconers demonstrate training techniques and showcase these majestic birds of prey up close.

Falconry holds significant cultural importance in UAE culture, symbolizing tradition, heritage, and the deep connection between Emiratis and the majestic birds of prey.

  • Option 3 (May-Oct.): Visit Qasr Al Hosn, the city's oldest stone building and a symbol of Abu Dhabi's heritage.

Explore the fort's exhibitions and learn about the history of the region, from its humble beginnings as a fishing village to its transformation into a modern metropolis.

  • Option 4 (anytime but during hot season it will be a bit difficult to stay outdoors for a long time)

Visit the Heritage Village (free admission) and admire the views from Al Kasir, just beside the Abu Dhabi opera.

Lunch: Mina fish market, best place for fish and seafood in Abu Dhabi

As the sun reaches its zenith over Abu Dhabi, there's no better way to sate your appetite and replenish your spirits than with a sumptuous seafood lunch at one of the city's local eateries.

Since its establishment in 1972, Mina Zayed (mina means port in Arabic), has stood as Abu Dhabi's primary port, consistently providing the city's restaurants with a steady supply of fresh fish for nearly five decades. However, recognizing the need for modernization, plans were set in motion in 2020 to replace the original ad hoc structures. The result? A brand-new redevelopment scheme that brought forth the unveiling of the new Mina fish market in 2022.

One of my favorite restaurants is Gandofly. You can choose your fish, get it cleaned and ask the restaurant to grill it for you (at extra cost) or if you are in a hurry, you can sit at any fish restaurant and enjoy the experience.

TIP: I recommend you try Hammour, a local favorite and often considered the king of fish in the UAE, Sultan Ibrahim or even Sheri.

Afternoon and evening in Yas Island

Visit the iconic Yas Marina Circuit, home to the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Take a guided tour of the circuit, exploring the state-of-the-art facilities, race control room, and paddock area, and learn about the thrilling world of motorsports and the history of the Grand Prix in Abu Dhabi.

Conclude your day with a leisurely dinner at Yas Mall, Abu Dhabi's premier shopping destination. Choose from a diverse array of restaurants offering international cuisine, from gourmet burgers and sushi to authentic Middle Eastern fare, before indulging in some retail therapy or catching a movie at the mall's cinema complex.

Or stroll along the Yas Bay waterfront, admiring the dazzling lights and futuristic architecture of Yas Island, and reflecting on the unforgettable experiences of your Abu Dhabi adventure. When exploring the area, you will discover a plethora of delightful dining options to choose from.

Do you have free time and want to explore more secret places?

Visit Bani Hashim Mosque resembling Al Aqsa Dome of the Rock. Afterwards, explore Souk Qaryat Al Beri's alleys (few steps away).

Experience abra boat ride from Shangri La Hotel for a unique view of the city's cultural heritage. Discover Abu Dhabi's hidden gems and vibrant experiences.

4 DAYS ITINERARY

We will start our first two days in Abu Dhabi as per the previous 2 days itinerary plan, and we will add some other exciting places outside the city of Abu Dhabi as well!

Day 3 - Al Ain to jebel hafeet: unveiling nature’s treasures

It's time to venture further afield, and discover the hidden gems that lie beyond the city limits. Buckle up for an adventure-packed day filled with culture, nature, and unforgettable experiences.

How to reach Al Ain?

At the time I am writing this travel guide (2024), the only ways to reach Al Ain (135km from Abu Dhabi), are car or bus.

  • The car ride is a pleasant 1.5-2h drive - use either private transfer, taxi or rent your own vehicle - the roads are well-maintained and offer scenic views, making the drive enjoyable. Through this day-trip ride, you will also get plenty of rest areas with all amenities (and cleaner than some other countries in Europe!).

  • The Emirates Bus service operates frequent buses between Abu Dhabi and Al Ain. You can catch these buses from Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station or from various stops across the city. The journey takes approximately 2 to 2.5 hours, depending on traffic.

Al Ain can also be explored in two days and you can even spend one night there. During the cold season, you can check-out the local events that showcase the essence of Emirati culture.

TIP: the weather in Al Ain is generally similar to Abu Dhabi, with hot summers and mild winters, but Al Ain may experience slightly cooler temperatures due to its inland location and higher elevation.

Al Ain

The Garden City, boasts UNESCO World Heritage Sites, historic forts, and cultural landmarks amidst lush greenery and serene oases, offering a peaceful retreat rich in Emirati heritage and natural beauty.

Al Ain Oasis

As soon as you reach Al Ain, head to Al Ain Oasis, a picturesque haven offering solace from urban hustle and bustle. There, amidst a stunning landscape adorned with 147,000 date palm trees and over 100 diverse plant species, you can marvel at remnants of ancient heritage, including the intricate falaj irrigation system. This system, integral to the region's history, contributes to Al Ain's UNESCO Cultural Site designation.

While wandering through the oasis, marvel at the intricate network of ancient channels, dating back 3,000 years, ingeniously designed to transport water from distant mountains. Remarkably, these channels continue to sustain the lush plantation, ensuring its vitality to this day! Keep in mind that the water levels may fluctuate with the seasons, so remain flexible during your visit if it appears temporarily absent.

Entrance to Al Ain Oasis is FREE, inviting exploration and discovery through various avenues. You can choose to either walk, ride a bicycle or book a guided buggy car tour. If you are photography enthusiasts, Al Ain Oasis is a perfect place to capture stunning shots. From the intricate patterns of the palm fronds to the reflections in the tranquil waterways, every corner of the oasis offers a unique photo opportunity.

TIP: make sure to bring sunscreen, hats, repellent and water and wear light coloured clothes during your visit.

Below - Al Ain Oasis in all its splendor.

Al Jahili Fort

After immersing yourself in the natural beauty of Al Ain Oasis, make your way to Al Jahili Fort, a majestic 19th-century fortress that stands as a testament to the region's rich history.

Explore the exhibits inside, which offer fascinating insights into Emirati heritage and the significance of the fort in protecting the oasis and its inhabitants back in the days.

Al Jahili Fort Details

Emirati Heritage

Lunch time; my favorite in an authentic ambience of 1960’s and the taste of Authentic Emirati Cuisine.

$$ Al Fanar Restaurant & Café: Known for its traditional Emirati cuisine, Al Fanar Restaurant & Café offers a unique dining experience amidst a charming setting. Enjoy authentic dishes such as machboos, harees, and grilled meats in a cozy atmosphere.

Jebel Hafeet

After a satisfying meal, embark on a scenic drive up Jebel Hafeet, the UAE's second-highest mountain. Wind your way along the hairpin bends as you ascend to the summit, where panoramic views of the desert plains await. Capture breathtaking photos of the rugged landscape stretching to the horizon, and feel a sense of awe at the vastness of the desert.

For hiking enthusiasts, the Jebel Hafeet trail is a must-visit destination in the UAE. Spanning over 8.4 kilometers, this trail offers breathtaking landscapes that allow you to truly immerse yourself in the natural beauty of Jebel Hafeet.

Plan for a leisurely hike that takes approximately 3 to 4 hours to complete. This timeframe ensures you have enough time to pause, soak in the stunning scenery, and capture unforgettable moments along the way.

Descend from Jebel Hafeet and make a pit stop at Green Mubazzarah, a picturesque park nestled at the mountain's base. Take a leisurely stroll along the lush greenery, soak your feet in the natural hot springs, or enjoy a picnic with stunning mountain views as your backdrop.

TIP: the ride to the summit requires a car or private/group tour.

Al Ain Zoo

As the day draws to a close, head to Al Ain Zoo for a memorable wildlife encounter. Home to a diverse array of animals from around the world, including endangered species like Arabian leopards and white lions, the zoo offers a chance to get up close and personal with nature. Don't miss the opportunity to witness feeding sessions and educational talks led by knowledgeable zookeepers.

Discover Al Ain's Night Market

If you're reluctant to end your day in Al Ain too soon, head to one of the vibrant night markets for an enriching evening experience. They offer a mix of local culture, culinary delights, crafted handicraft and artisanal goods.

  • Bawadi Soulk

  • Souk Al Qaws

  • Al Ain Souk

  • Souk Al Qattara

Day 4 - Coastal Charms And Cultural delights

Let’s go on a day trip to the UAE Al Dhafra Region- where I lived in the city of Ruwais for 9 years!

On this day trip, you will explore Sir Bani Yas Island coastal charms, one of the eight desert islands of the Western Region. From pristine beaches, archaeological sites to wildlife sanctuary and outdoors activities, day four promises to be a captivating blend of relaxation and discovery.

Sir Bani Yas, boasting the largest wildlife reserve in Arabia spanning 87 square kilometers, was established in 1977 by Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan. This royal nature reserve aimed to safeguard Arabia's endangered species. Sheikh Zayed's vision led to the introduction of exotic animals like llamas, giraffes, and antelopes to the island.

How to reach Sir Bani Yas Island?

You will have to start this day trip early as it is a 250km drive from Abu Dhabi, about 3h, and I cannot praise the scenery here as it is mostly sand…sand and sand! You will have to reach Jebel Al Dhanna first from where you'll find a ferry terminal where you can park your car. Board the ferry to Sir Bani Yas Island, which takes about 20-30 minutes to reach the island.

TIP: to be honest, I would not recommend the bus option (unless you are on a very very tight budget and that you are okay with the 4-5h lonnnngggg journey - trust me I did it several times from Ruwais to Abu Dhabi and it is really exhausting). Therefore, renting a car/private tour/taxi will be your best and fastest option to go to the Western region.

Upon arrival on Sir Bani Yas Island, immerse yourself in the wonders of the Arabian Wildlife Park. Experience a unique guided safari tour or opt for a self-drive adventure through the park's vast savannahs and rugged terrain. Keep your camera ready as you encounter free-roaming wildlife, including graceful gazelles, majestic giraffes, and the iconic Arabian oryx.

TIP: for your food cravings, note that all restaurants are located in the Desert island resort & spa by Anantara and Anantara Sir Bani Yas Island Al Sahel Villa Resort.

After lunch, it's time to explore the island's wealth of outdoor activities. Whether you're drawn to water sports like kayaking and snorkeling or prefer land-based adventures such as hiking and mountain biking, Sir Bani Yas Island offers something for every adventurer.

Don't forget to visit the island's cultural and historical sites, including ancient ruins and archaeological sites, such as the Sir Bani Yas Church and Monastery, dating back to the 6th century AD, provide a glimpse into the island's early Christian history. Adjacent to the church, an ancient Christian cemetery contains numerous burial chambers and tombs, shedding light on burial practices of the time. Additionally, prehistoric sites on the island reveal evidence of early human occupation, contributing to our understanding of ancient civilizations in the region.

The End!
