My Expat Journey; From France to Abu Dhabi

New beginnings can be scary, but surprises always come along the way…

A Life-Changing Decision

It was eleven years ago that my life took a sharp turn. I decided to leave my job at a top company in Paris and head to the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Paris is a city many find irresistible with its charm, but in 2013, I felt overwhelmed and exhausted by the city's fast pace and high expectations. Looking towards the UAE felt like a fresh start. I had some experience visiting the UAE as an Emirates airlines staff in the UK - not as a cabin crew! - and it painted a bright picture of UAE’s opportunities. Beyond the country’s fancy image, I saw a place where people from all walks of life came together harmoniously—quite different from the societal tensions I experienced in France. The UAE seemed like a haven of tolerance and unity, where differences in nationality, culture, and religion blended smoothly. This was a stark contrast to the division prevalent in my home country. With a hopeful heart and a desire for change, I set off on a new journey, excited by the endless possibilities that lay ahead.

Discovering Abu Dhabi: A French Teacher's Journey

In 2013, I ventured into the world of teaching by accepting a French teaching position in the Western region of the UAE, 240km away from Abu Dhabi. The initial excitement of the opportunity was soon overshadowed by the challenges of being far from the city hustle. After earning my teaching diploma, spending 8 years in two different schools, and numerous emotional moments, I decided to transition into a new venture - a home bakery business. I do miss one thing though; teaching, sharing knowledge and my adorable students who are all grown-ups now.

The journey of my bakery business had its share of highs and lows, prompting me to make a pivotal decision to move to Abu Dhabi in early 2023 to find a better balance and to nurture my well-being. This shift opened up a world of discovery for me - I fell in love with photography, delved into blogging, and explored countless food and non-food spots in the city.

My passion for exploration and sharing experiences with newcomers led me to embrace platforms like Instagram and TikTok. Through these channels, I document my adventures in Abu Dhabi, from hidden gems to popular eateries, aiming to make the transition easier for those stepping into this vibrant city.

Navigating life in a new country can be daunting, and having a guiding voice can make all the difference. Having experienced the void of guidance firsthand, my mission is to offer insights, recommendations, and a sense of belonging to those finding their footing in Abu Dhabi.

Living in Abu Dhabi is truly a privilege, offering a lifestyle that is both luxurious and distinct. Compared to France, Abu Dhabi provides residents with a unique blend of modernity, safety and tradition, making it an enticing destination for expatriates worldwide. With its year-round sunshine and abundance of upscale amenities, Abu Dhabi attracts individuals seeking a cosmopolitan yet relaxed lifestyle. The city's thriving expatriate community and tax-free income opportunities make it an attractive choice for professionals from around the globe.

While France boasts a rich cultural heritage and leisurely pursuits like historical spots and cuisine, Abu Dhabi offers a dynamic environment with futuristic architecture, world-class healthcare, and a vibrant social scene. Whether indulging in luxury shopping, desert adventures, or cultural experiences, residents of Abu Dhabi enjoy a lifestyle that seamlessly combines sophistication with Arabian hospitality.

A bit of History

The UAE holds a captivating history, shaped by ancient Bedouin tribes and British influence. Established on December 2, 1971, the UAE unites seven emirates, each with its rich heritage. Bedouin tribes, notably the Bani Yas, have inhabited these lands for centuries, laying the foundation for the nation's cultural tapestry. The region, formerly known as the Trucial States under British protection, saw a transformative shift with the discovery of oil in the 1950s, propelling it towards rapid development and modernization.

Qasr Al Hosn stands as Abu Dhabi's oldest building, built by the Bani Yas tribe in 1761. Initially serving as the government seat and residence of the ruling Al Nahyan family, it now welcomes visitors as a museum, offering insights into Abu Dhabi's history and ancient ways of life.

The UAE's economy is as vibrant as its history, anchored by its oil and gas reserves. Abu Dhabi, boasting the lion's share of these resources, has been instrumental in driving economic growth. However, the UAE's foresight in diversification cannot be overlooked. Heavy investments in sectors like tourism, finance, and renewable energy underscore its commitment to long-term sustainability. Dubai's status as a global trade hub, coupled with the allure of free zones offering enticing incentives, positions the UAE as a magnet for foreign investment and business opportunities.

The vast expanse of the Abu Dhabi desert stretches endlessly, captivating with its serene beauty and timeless allure.

Looking ahead, the UAE is not resting on its laurels. Bold economic visions, such as Dubai's Vision 2021 and Abu Dhabi's Economic Vision 2030, embody its commitment to innovation and progress. These strategies aim to propel the nation towards greater economic diversification, innovation, and sustainability. By leveraging its strategic location, world-class infrastructure, and business-friendly policies, the UAE is poised to carve out a promising future on the global stage, continuing its legacy of prosperity and growth.

Abu Dhabi is the capital of the UAE

As the largest Emirate, boasting a population of 1,593,284 as of 2023, Abu Dhabi predominantly comprises expatriates.

I could write a whole book about my life and experience in the UAE, but I just really wanted to introduce myself, why I am doing this blog and above all, I am hoping to be able to help anyone out there who feels the need to leave their home countries for better opportunities. Challenges, amazing encounters and unexpected situations came along the way, but I truly believe such experience can shape and shift your life in ways you would never have imagined!

What about you? Are you also an expat and what is your history?
